We decided to create a side event at Wikimania 2024, a moment before the weekend.
Getting into the weekend: A Moment of Rest & Community
Wikimania 2024 is the annual celebration of sharing the love to create free knowledge. We are making use of this opportunity to seat together and share personal moments of getting into the weekend.
What to expect?
This event will offer a welcoming and inclusive space for Wikipedians of all backgrounds to connect, unwind, and celebrate the spirit of community that thrives on Wikipedia. Inspired by the Jewish tradition of Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming the Sabbath), this event will be entirely secular and focus on the universal human need for a pause, reflection, and connection after a busy week of editing.
Objectives
Highlight Wikipedia contributions: The event will include a unique Wikipedia-related activity, Each of the participants will have a chance to share an article that reminds her/him of the weekend or evoke a sense of peace, rejuvenation, or the importance of taking breaks.
Offer a moment of rest: Wikimania is a jam-packed event. This side event will offer a dedicated time for participants to relax, recharge, and prepare for the rest of the conference. We will do it with singalong and candle lighting.
Time:
We will get together for an hour or so. This allows for introductions and a Wikipedia-related activity. I think that this side event will be a valuable addition to Wikimania 2024.
We will start at 17:00. This will allow Shabbat observers enough time to get back to their hotels before Shabbat enters.
